Planning to hire a car in Phuket? If you're driving on a UK licence, you need a bit of paper before you fly.
Here is the simple 2026 guide for UK drivers.
Do UK drivers need an IDP in Phuket?
Yes. By law in Thailand you must carry your full UK driving licence AND an International Driving Permit (IDP) together. Thai police and car hire desks in Phuket ask for both, especially at checkpoints around Phuket Airport (HKT), Patong and Karon.
If you don't have it, you risk a fine and - more importantly - your travel insurance can be void if you have an accident.
Which IDP do you need for Thailand?
For Thailand you need the 1968 version IDP. It's valid for 3 years or until your UK licence expires, whichever comes first.
Cost is £5.50 in the UK. Get it from a PayPoint store with IDP service - use the PayPoint Store Locator and filter for "International Driving Permit". Take your full UK photocard licence with you. You can't get it once you're in Thailand, so sort it before you fly.
Driving in Phuket - what UK drivers should know
Good news: Thailand drives on the left, same as the UK, so it feels familiar.
- Documents: Always carry UK licence + 1968 IDP + passport copy in the car.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside. Lots of speed cameras now on the airport road.
- Deposit: Most Phuket hire companies take a low cash/card deposit - typically 3,000 THB - not your whole excess.
- Insurance: Check CDW and theft protection is included before you book.
