Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) Car Hire from £11/day – T1 Pickup, Prices and Island Driving Tips

Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) is in El Matorral, 5km south of Puerto del Rosario and right in the middle of the island, which makes it perfect for self-drive. Corralejo and its famous dunes are 35 minutes north, Caleta de Fuste is 10 minutes north, Costa Calma 35 minutes south and Morro Jable and Jandia Peninsula 50-60 minutes south on the FV-2. VPS Rental Cars compares 800+ live prices at FUE so you see the real GBP total with CDW and theft protection included, not a low headline rate that doubles at the desk with extra insurance you did not want.

FUE has one main terminal, T1, for all international flights from the UK, Germany and Spain. All car hire desks are inside T1 arrivals after baggage. The main on-airport brands are Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Cicar – Cicar is the biggest local brand in the Canary Islands and is known for no hidden fuel charges. Most cars are parked on-airport in P1 car park, 2-3 minutes walk from the terminal. You do not need a shuttle like in Antalya or Malaga. Allow 10-15 minutes from landing to driving away. Have your UK photocard licence, credit card for the deposit block and your VPS voucher ready. Best rated at FUE is Cicar – Cabrera Medina at 8.5/10 for full-full fuel policy and no hard-sell at the desk. Cheapest is usually Record Go, Click&Go and TopCar from £11/day for economy and £22/day for compact SUV.

Prices change daily but this is what to budget in GBP for Fuerteventura. Economy such as Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 or Fiat 500 from £11 to £16 per day low season and £18 to £28 per day in July, August and half terms. Perfect for two people, tiny fuel use, easy to park in Corralejo Old Town and the narrow lanes around El Cotillo. Compact such as Seat Ibiza, VW Polo or Opel Corsa from £14 to £22 per day. This is our most booked size for Fuerteventura. Boot space for two large suitcases and two cabin bags, A/C essential in summer when it is 30C plus. No-excess or zero-deductible options start from £19 per day and remove the large excess block. Compact SUV such as Nissan Juke, Seat Arona or Peugeot 2008 from £24 to £35 per day low season and £32 to £48 per day high season. Most popular for Fuerteventura because of higher ground clearance on the unpaved roads to Cofete, Popcorn Beach and the west coast surf spots around La Pared. Full-size SUV such as Nissan Qashqai or VW T-Roc from £32 to £52 per day – better for families with surfboards or kite gear for Flag Beach. People carrier and estate such as Dacia Jogger 7-seater from £38 per day – only about 8% of the FUE fleet, book early for school holidays when Jandia villas sell out.

Deposit is key in Fuerteventura. Most suppliers block £200 to £900 on your credit card at pickup, depending on car group and whether you take super cover. This is not a charge, it is a pre-authorisation for the excess. VPS filters low-deposit options from £200 equivalent. Cicar includes zero excess as standard on many cars – you pay a bit more per day, around £24 per day total for compact, but there is no big block on your card. If you only have a debit card, choose TopCar or AutoReisen which accept debit with full protection from around £28 per day total. Without super cover, expect an excess of £600 to £1,100 if you damage the car. All our free cancellation deals start from £11 per day and allow cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. Zero-excess is £5 to £9 per day extra.

Driving in Fuerteventura is one of the easiest in Spain. One main road, the FV-2, runs north to south from Corralejo to Morro Jable. The FV-1 goes to El Cotillo and the north-west. Speed limit is 90km/h on open roads, 50km/h in towns like Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario. Roads are wide, empty and well maintained. No tolls anywhere in Fuerteventura or the Canary Islands. Fuel is cheaper than mainland Spain – around 1.25 to 1.35 euros per litre – fill in Puerto del Rosario or Caleta de Fuste, not at the airport. The only tricky part is wind and sand. Calima sandstorms can reduce visibility to 50m in winter – drive slow and use dipped headlights. Unpaved tracks to Cofete Beach, Popcorn Beach at Majanicho and La Pared are technically not covered by basic CDW – you need 4x4 or SUV with full protection. If you want to visit Cofete, take a compact SUV and add super cover – the 18km dirt road takes 40 minutes each way.

Distances from FUE Airport. Puerto del Rosario 6 minutes, Caleta de Fuste 10 minutes, Costa de Antigua 12 minutes, Corralejo and Dunas National Park 35 minutes, El Cotillo 40 minutes, Gran Tarajal 35 minutes, Costa Calma 35 minutes, La Lajita Zoo 40 minutes, Morro Jable 55 minutes, Jandia and Sotavento Beach 60 minutes. You cannot take a Fuerteventura hire car on the ferry to Lanzarote or Gran Canaria without written permission – most suppliers forbid it.

Licence rules. UK photocard driving licence is valid. You do not need an International Driving Permit for the Canary Islands. Minimum age is usually 21 with 1 year licence held, some economy suppliers from 19. Young driver surcharge under 25 is £6 to £10 per day.
